Rubondo National Park is located on Rubondo Island in Lake Victoria, Tanzania. The park, established in 1977, spans an area of about 240 square kilometers and is one of the most remote and pristine conservation areas in the country. The island itself, situated on the western shores of Lake Victoria, is known for its lush forests, diverse wildlife, and vibrant bird populations. It is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, though it is distinct in its ecology due to its unique island environment.
The park is famous for its diverse ecosystems, which include dense forests, savannahs, wetlands, and the shores of Lake Victoria. These varied habitats provide a home for numerous species of wildlife, both endemic and migratory. Notably, Rubondo is one of the few places in the world where visitors can see the rare and endangered species such as the chimpanzee. In the 1960s, a chimpanzee population was introduced to the island, and today they thrive in the park’s forests, offering a unique opportunity for chimpanzee viewing in their natural habitat.
In addition to chimpanzees, Rubondo National Park is home to a variety of animals including giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, elephants, and several species of antelope. The park is also a haven for bird watchers, with over 200 species of birds, some of which are rare or endemic to the region. The island’s wetlands provide ideal conditions for birdlife, and migratory birds frequently stop here during their seasonal travels. Among the bird species that can be spotted are the African fish eagle, pelicans, and the great white egret.
