Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and well-known wildlife reserves. Located in the central part of the country, it covers an area of about 3,230 square kilometers and is part of the larger Selous Game Reserve. The park is situated near the town of Morogoro, along the main highway connecting Dar es Salaam to the southern parts of Tanzania, making it a popular destination for both local and international visitors.
The park is known for its stunning diversity of wildlife and ecosystems. It is home to a wide range of species, including the “big five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino), although rhinos are now rare due to poaching. Mikumi is also famous for its large herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and various species of antelope. The park is situated in a mix of habitats, from open savannahs to dense forests, wetlands, and the scenic Miombo woodlands, providing a rich environment for both flora and fauna.
The Mikumi ecosystem is characterized by its rich birdlife, with over 400 species of birds recorded in the park. Visitors can spot a wide variety of birds, including flamingos, hornbills, and various raptors. The park’s wetlands, in particular, attract migratory birds, making Mikumi a significant location for birdwatching. The presence of diverse habitats, from rivers and swamps to dry plains, ensures a vibrant biodiversity throughout the year.
