Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is one of the country’s smaller but most scenic parks. Covering about 330 square kilometers, it stretches between the western edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment and the shores of Lake Manyara, an alkaline lake that swells or shrinks seasonally. Its lush, varied landscape, from groundwater forests and grassy plains to the iconic Rift Valley wall, offers a unique experience in East African wildlife and nature viewing. The park’s diverse ecosystems are home to an abundance of flora and fauna, making it a popular destination for both short visits and extended safaris.

One of Lake Manyara’s biggest draws is its incredible bird population, particularly for migratory birds. The lake attracts hundreds of bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, and storks, which flock to its alkaline waters to feed. Flamingos in particular can be seen in vast numbers during the wetter months, creating a stunning pink spectacle across the lake. The park also boasts rich woodlands and savanna habitats that support a variety of wildlife, including the “tree-climbing lions” that are unique to this area. These lions, often seen resting on branches, are a rare sight and add a unique aspect to the Lake Manyara experience.

The park is also renowned for its elephants, which are part of a significant population that roams freely within its boundaries. Visitors to the park often get close encounters with these gentle giants, who are relatively calm and accustomed to human presence. Conservation efforts have helped the elephant population flourish in recent years, making Lake Manyara a great location to observe their behaviors up close. Besides elephants, the park is home to other mammals such as zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, and hippos, which thrive in the lush habitats near the lake and water sources.
