Overview

Arusha National Park is located in northern Tanzania, situated at the base of Mount Meru, the country’s second-highest peak. The park covers an area of 137 square kilometers and offers a stunning landscape that features a wide range of ecosystems, from lush forests to open savannahs. It is known for its rich biodiversity, scenic beauty, and proximity to the famous Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. Arusha National Park is a gem for nature lovers, offering a quieter alternative to the larger, more tourist-heavy parks in Tanzania.

One of the park’s highlights is Mount Meru, which rises 4,566 meters above sea level. The dormant volcano provides a dramatic backdrop to the park’s diverse habitats, which include grasslands, montane forests, and wetlands. Visitors to the park can explore its various terrains, including the beautiful Ngurdoto Crater, which was once the caldera of the mountain. The crater is home to a diverse array of wildlife and offers breathtaking views, making it one of the park’s most visited areas.

Arusha National Park is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and various species of antelope. The park is known for its unique population of black-and-white colobus monkeys, which can be seen in the forested areas. While it doesn’t have the large predators like lions or elephants commonly found in other parks, its wildlife is nonetheless diverse, and the park is a haven for birdwatchers. Over 400 bird species, including the endangered African grey parrot, can be spotted in the park.

One of the park’s unique features is its accessibility. It is located just 25 kilometers from the city of Arusha, making it an excellent option for day trips or shorter safaris. Visitors can enjoy walking safaris with experienced guides, offering a chance to observe the park’s flora and fauna up close. The walking safaris allow tourists to connect with nature in a more intimate way than the traditional game drives in larger parks. Additionally, canoeing on the park’s Momella Lakes offers a peaceful way to experience the surrounding landscapes and observe wildlife from a different perspective.
